There are options that affect general performance of 7Canaries irrespective of a certain recognition algorithm setup. Here are some basic guidelines and explanations related to General Options setup.
General Options Dialog is called by pressing General Options button.
7Canaries uses temporary files for storing audio data in uncompressed form. This is usually done in the following cases:
| · | For new temporary recorded files.
|
| · | For quick access when opening compressed files (MP3, compressed Waves).
|
| · | For accessing data from an Audio CD.
| In latter two cases using of temporary files can speed up the access dramatically.
Temporary files can consume a lot of disk space, so be careful when selecting a directory for them. By default temporary files are located in the application directory. If you do not have sufficient disk space, you can cancel the usage of temporary files, but this is not recommended, especially when working with Audio CD's.
Wave Input devices are used for inputting sound sources into the computer. Both Realtime Recognition and Wave Recording are performed through such device. There might be several Wave In devices in one system, even on one sound card. One Wave In device can input data from several sound sources (microphone, Line In, etc.), but usually one at a time. If you cannot record anything, probably you did not selected correct Wave In device or you did not choose a correct sound source for it. You can choose Wave In device in the Devices Options Dialog, but source selection can be made only from the Windows Mixer (Recording Properties), refer to its documentation for details.
Wave Output devices are used for output of sound from the computer. When you play Wave, MP3 or CD Audio (in 7Canaries), you use a Wave Out device. Many sources can output signals to the same Wave Out device. If you hear nothing when playing back some Wave or MP3, it may imply that some sources are muted or set to a too low level in Windows Mixer, or you have selected a wrong Wave Out Device in 7Canaries.
MIDI Output devices are used for playback of MIDI messages (notes and some special commands). Both built-in synthesizers and external MIDI synthesizers are MIDI Out devices. To ensure correct playback of MIDI by a built-n synthesizer, you need to choose it as a MIDI Out Device in 7Canaries and set its volume in Windows Mixer. To use an external MIDI synthesizer, choose MIDI Out Port (it is usually called "MIDI UART" or similarly) and make sure that the synthesizer is properly connected to the "MIDI Out" port of the sound card.
Refer to the General Options Dialog for setting other options.
